Deshaun Watson trade rumors: 8 teams were interested in Texans QB; ‘bidding war’ was in the works

More than a quarter of the NFL was reportedly in the hunt for Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Watson is still in the midst of sexual assault civil suits, but months before the first allegation surfaced, eight NFL teams called to ask about Watson, with one offer made clear.

Per the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain, the market for Watson was heating up prior to the surfacing of the sexual assault and misconduct allegations: The Washington Football Team, Jets, Patriots, Dolphins, Broncos, 49ers, Bears and Panthers were all ready to bid on Watson’s services.

Texans GM Nick Caserio was planning to fan the flames of a bidding war, with several teams biting. Most notable, McClain reports that the Dolphins were ready to make a big offer, starting with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the No. 3 overall pick. Other offers weren’t noted in the report.

McClain has also maintained that the Texans were looking for two first-round picks, two second rounders and a defensive starter for Watson, which was originally reported in January.

The Texans quarterback demanded a trade earlier in 2021, months before sexual assault allegations in which nearly two dozen women have come forward with various accounts of Watson’s misconduct. The NFL is investigating the claims.

Watson has vehemently denied the accusations and his lawyer, Rusty Hardin, set out to discredit accusers in recent weeks.

While the trade market has remained murky, one thing is apparent: It’s uncertain whether Watson will be wearing a uniform for any NFL team come the start of the 2021 season.
