Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott agree to terms on four-year, $160 million contract

The wait is up.

After more than two years of negotiations, the Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott have agreed to terms on a long-term contract.

Prescott and the Cowboys agreed to a four-year deal worth $160 million with $126 million guaranteed, a person with knowledge of the contract confirmed to USA TODAY Sports on Monday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the terms had not been publicly announced. The team announced the deal had been reached Monday evening, with a press announcement scheduled for Wednesday.

The deal is worth a max of $164 million, the person said.

The Cowboys drafted Prescott 135th overall in 2016, after which he started 72 straight games. On Oct. 11, he suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his ankle that sidelined him the remainder of the season.

The Cowboys and Prescott maintained publicly that they wanted to stay together. But they couldn’t reach terms on a deal in 2019 negotiations or 2020, Prescott twice playing on expiring deals.

His franchise tag in 2020 was worth $31.4 million. A second tag this season was set to cost $37.68 million, all of which would hit the cap in a year when COVID shrank the cap.

This breaking story will be updated.
