Carson Wentz injury news: Colts not considering trade for Nick Foles, other QBs, per report
Carson Wentz is already dealing with an injury issue during his first season with the Colts. The team’s new starter had surgery to remove a bone from his foot and will be sidelined for five to 12 weeks as a result.
But the Colts aren’t yet looking to trade for a veteran quarterback even with the uncertainty surrounding Wentz’s Week 1 status.
As ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports, the Colts aren’t interested in trading for veteran quarterbacks such as Nick Foles, Gardner Minshew or Marcus Mariota. However, Mortensen acknowledged that could change if Wentz’s “relatively safe surgery and rehab gets complicated.”
So, for now, Indianapolis will rely on an internal option to fill in for Wentz. The Colts have four quarterbacks on their roster aside from Wentz. They are Jacob Eason, Sam Ehlinger, Jalen Morton and Brett Hundley, who they signed after Wentz’s injury.
Of the bunch, only Hundley has attempted an NFL pass. He started nine games for the Packers in 2017 and posted a 3-6 record while completing 60.8 percent of his passes. He totaled 1,836 yards, nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions as a passer. In 2019, he attempted 11 passes as the backup for the Cardinals behind Kyler Murray.
Meanwhile, Eason and Ehlinger were drafted by the Colts in each of the past two drafts. Eason was a fourth-round pick in 2020 while Ehlinger was a sixth-round pick in 2021. Morton went undrafted in 2020 out of Prairie View A&M and signed with the Colts during the 2021 offseason.
Eason is the only player on the roster who was with the Colts last year, so he probably has the upper hand in the quarterback battle right now. However, if he and the other QB options on the roster struggle, perhaps the team will change their tune and target one of the experienced backups that’s available via trade.
