Broncos training camp rewind, Day 3: Vic Fangio says “no separation” in Drew Lock/Teddy Bridgwater competition – The Denver Post

Player attendance

Did not practice: Active/PUP — CB Duke Dawson (knee), CB Essang Bassey (knee), OLB Baron Browning (leg), OLB Von Miller (day off), S Kareem Jackson (day off) and WR Tim Patrick (leg).

Patrick was held out by coach Vic Fangio.

“He just felt a little soreness (Thursday) so I actually made the decision that he would be off (Friday), but he’s fine,” Fangio said. “He could have practiced. I trumped the medical people. I get a joy out of that sometimes.”

Browning watched practice with a brace on his left knee. OLB Bradley Chubb (ankle) continues to be kept out of team work.

COVID-19 reserve list: S Jamar Johnson and CB Kary Vincent.

New injury: NT Mike Purcell (ankle) got tangled up during an 11-on-11 play and limped to the trainer’s room.

“The early prognosis is it’s a sprain, but we’ll see,” Fangio said.

Purcell missed the last 10 games of 2020 with a foot injury.

Top play

During 7-on-7, WR KJ Hamler made a diving catch on QB Drew Lock’s throw for a 50-yard touchdown. Hamler beat CB Parnell Motley on a deep post route.

Top play (bonus)

A sleepy practice was energized when C Lloyd Cushenberry put LB Alexander Johnson to the ground while blocking for RB Melvin Gordon on a screen pass. “I think (Johnson) was slowing up and got (hit),” said inside linebacker Josey Jewell, who added with a laugh, “(Johnson) will do what he needs to later on.”

Thumbs up

QB Drew Lock. He had slow starts to the first two practices, but was sharp from beginning-to-end Friday, completing all but one of his 11 attempts in 11-on-11 and all six in 7-on-7.

WR Jerry Jeudy. Shut out on Thursday, he had a combined five catches in 11-on-11/7-on-7.

Kickoff return drill. It seemed like anybody who wanted to catch a kickoff via the Jugs machine got to. The full list — WRs Diontae Spencer, De’Mornay Pierson-El, Trinity Benson, Kendall Hinton, Tyrie Cleveland and KJ Hamler and RBs Mike Boone, LeVante Bellamy, Javonte Williams and Damarea Crockett.

Thumbs down

Nose tackle depth. Mike Purcell’s ankle injury may not be serious, but if he is sidelined, it will show the Broncos have to answer some questions at nose tackle. Shamar Stephen? DeShawn Williams? McTelvin Agim?

CB Parnell Motley. It’s been tough sledding for Motley, who gave up two more touchdowns Friday.

Odds and ends

*The Broncos ran 56 plays of 11-on-11 and 16 plays of 7-on-7.

*11-on-11 highlights: First period — QB Drew Lock’s first pass was a dart to WR Jerry Jeudy on a crossing route. … Second period — Jeudy ran around the left edge on a flip from QB Teddy Bridgewater. … Third period (red zone) — Bridgewater’s first pass hit the crossbar. The period wrapped up with a field-goal-unit-rushes-on-for-a-kick drill. K Brandon McManus was 2-of-3, his miss hitting the right upright. … Fourth period — The quarterbacks completed all nine passes. Jeudy ran a great comeback route to gain the advantage against CB Bryce Callahan. WR Trinity Benson ran a corner route to beat CB Parnell Motley (pass thrown by QB Brett Rypien). Bridgewater and C Quinn Meinerz had a botched exchange, resulting in an aborted play. … Fifth period — CB Ronald Darby had tight coverage on Jeudy downfield as Bridgewater’s pass was slightly overthrown.

*7-on-7 highlights: The quarterbacks combined to complete their first 13 passes, the streak broken by a WR Tyrie Cleveland’s drop. It was a big tight end period (six catches).

*Coach Vic Fangio’s take on Quarterback Competition 2021? “They’ve been pretty consistent, both of them,” he said. “I see no separation if that’s what you’re asking.”

*Fangio said he graded the quarterbacks’ first two practices on Thursday night. Does a great play count as positive on the ledger as a bad play does negatively? “To me, they’re about equal,” he said. “I don’t know what the intelligent equation would be, but one (poor) play that could really affect the game — how many of the ‘wow’ plays do you need to wipe that (bad play) off the books? I don’t know the answer to that.”

*RT Bobby Massie took his initial turn with the first-team offensive line.

*The NFL’s league-wide “Training Camp: Back Together Saturday,” event is Saturday and the Broncos will practice at 9:15 a.m. Parking lots open at 7:30 a.m. and gates at 8:30 a.m. The list of events include outside linebacker Von Miller addressing fans, a special dedication to the Broncos’ 10 Pro Football Hall of Famers (10 individual flags will be raised in their honor 45 minutes before practice), recognition to the Colorado high school football state champions and alumni alley (meet former players). *The Broncos have added five staff members through their season-long diversity coaching fellowship, the Nunn-Wooten Scouting Fellowship and the Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellowship program.
