Boxing hopeful Frank Gore has turned down NFL offers while training for ‘high-profile fight’
The 2021 NFL season marked the first time since 2005 that Frank Gore wasn’t on a roster to start the season. The 38-year-old running back played 16 consecutive seasons for the 49ers, Colts, Dolphins, Bills and Jets and hasn’t given up on playing again.
However, Gore has another focus right now, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports. He’s preparing to give boxing a shot.
“I’ve been training for both — football and boxing,” Gore told NFL.com. “I’ve always loved boxing, so that’s what I’ve been doing. And we’re trying to make a fight happen. If we do that, you’ll see me in the ring.”

There have been some teams that have needed veteran running back help ahead of the season, and the Ravens are the most notable of the bunch. Baltimore signed Le’Veon Bell, Devonta Freeman and Latavius Murray to help replace their injured triage of JK Dobbins, Gus Edwards and Justice Hill. Gore hasn’t signed anywhere despite these openings, and he seems focused on his endeavors as a boxer.
As such, it seems that Gore will continue to put his NFL career on hold as he trains for his potential fight. And he is enjoying his training so far.
“I just fell in love with how hard it is,” Gore said. “I felt like, ‘Man, I couldn’t fight.’ And I always like a challenge. So I kept doing it and doing it and I saw myself getting better and better.”

Rapoport reports that “a high-profile fight in the works for Gore.” If Gore does land one, he would be the latest non-boxer to participate in a notable bout in the sport.
Recently, former Bengals receiver Chad Johnson (a.k.a., Chad Ochocinco) fought MMA fighter Brian Maxwell in an exhibition. YouTube influencers Jake and Logan Paul have also participated in several fights against the likes of Floyd Mayweather, MMA fighter Tyron Woodley and former NBA player Nate Robinson.
Gore stands at 5-9 and is 212 pounds. He ranks third in NFL history with an even 16,000 rushing yards during his career, so he could prove to be a strong, tough opponent for whoever he faces.
