World’s richest sports club owner could afford to buy any team with huge wealth
To be able to buy a professional sports team it helps to have millions in the bank. For Mukesh Ambani, millions is just pocket change. The 66-year-old is the 13th richest man in the world, according to Forbes, and thanks to his various enterprises he has enough money to buy any team in the world, and still have plenty of change left over.
Ambani’s net worth is a staggering £70billion. The most expensive sports team ever sold was the NFL’s Denver Broncos in a $4.6 billion (£3.66bn) takeover last year. The sale of Manchester United is expected to break that record by costing around £5billion.
However, that is pocket change compared to Ambani’s net worth. His company Reliance Industries generates £84billion and is involved in petrochemicals, oil and gas, telecom and retail; meaning only the likes of Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos currently have more in the bank.
However, it’s not only business that Ambani has a passion for. The billionaire loves his sport and is the current owner of the Mumbai Indians, the most successful team in cricket’s Indian Premier League.
The team alone generates a whopping £1billion in revenue, which is topped up by his other teams including a franchise in the inaugural Women’s Premier League and cricket teams in South Africa and UAE.
Ambani’s wealth dwarfs that of other sports owners. Denver Broncos chief Rob Walton has almost half his net worth with £49bn and Stade Rennais’ owner Francois Pinault and his family sit on a mere £29bn in comparison.
Even the late Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz’s son, Mark, doesn’t compare with £31bn. The likes of Salzburg, Leipzig, and MLS outfit New York fall under his umbrella.
Most notably Ambani is in constant battle with Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer’s £80bn, who was CEO of Microsoft from 2000 to 2014.

A familiar face to many Manchester United fans, Sir Jim Ratcliffe also makes the Forbes rich list with a fortune of £16.9bn. The OGC Nice owner is currently in the mix to buy the Red Devils for a reported £6bn, a mere drop in the ocean for Ambani.
Arsenal’s current owners, the Kroenke family, are not too far ahead of Manchester United’s prospective bidder. Stanley Kroenke and his wife Ann Walton Kroenke are worth an impressive £17.4bn combined.
While there is plenty of money in the Premier League, Ambani would be some way ahead of the competition. Only time will tell if the businessman decides to splash the cash on a team to throw the league on its head.
