Village cricketer turns up to away match and finds hamster in his bag
A Cornwall cricket team had an unlikely mascot for their away league match when a hamster, named Gerbus, was found inside their bowler's kit bag.
Youngster Tyler Ivey was late to the crease for his side Holsworth as he was explaining where the hamster was to his worried mum. Better late than never, Ivey eventually bowled out the opening batsman..
Holsworthy CC, who play in the Cornwall Cricket League, tweeted out the hamster news. They said: "Our young bowler Tyler opened his cricket bag after a two-hour journey to our away game on Saturday, and realised his hamster had been in his bag the whole time."
The tweet was shared @ThatsSoVillage and their followers who were keen for an update on the hamster's welfare. Fellow Holsworthy seconds player @Ryan_Smith180 was quick to reassure people that Gerbus was returned home safely.
He said: "The hamster did survive! It was well looked after in a bucket and fed carrot and veg from the kitchen during the game. Luckily the bucket was kindly leant to us for the journey home so the hamster didn’t have to return to the bag. Oh and most importantly. His name is Gerbus."
@Ryan_Smith180 added: "He had a lovely holiday really, he was pampered by both teams all day and was safely home before the evening! It does get more village… First over after drinks was due to be bowled by young Tyler, however he was very delayed onto the pitch, as he was explaining the story of the lost Gerbus to his EXTREMELY worried mother. He then took the wicket of their opener who was on 50!"
Herbus seconds lost their match by 178 runs at Duloe, @Ryan_Smith180 added: "We conceded 240 odd runs and got bowled out for 60, not saying it was Gerbus’ fault but he probably won’t be coming away again any time soon…"
