Tom Daley’s soaring net worth despite not competing at Commonwealth Games
British diving star Tom Daley may not have competed at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, but he did carry the Queen's baton during the opening ceremony.
Despite deciding not to compete, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist has not retired – announcing before Birmingham that he was taking a year out from the sport to rest and spent time with family.
The 28-year-old carried the baton in support of LGBT+ rights during the opening ceremony last month, entering the stadium surrounded by flagbearers representing some of the 35 Commonwealth countries where homosexuality is still a crime.
Olympic champion Daley has spoken out against the anti-LGBTQ+ laws of many of the 56 Commonwealth member states.
This is the subject of BBC One show Tom Daley: Illegal to Be Me, which will be broadcast tonight at 9pm.
In it, Daley visits some of the most homophobic Commonwealth countries – where punishments for being gay including whipping, life imprisonment and even death – and speaks to top sportspeople living in fear and facing persecution.
The documentary explores what the sporting world can do to help and culminates with Daley's public stand at the opening ceremony.
Last year, Daley spoke about wanting to see countries where homosexuality is punishable by death be banned from the next Olympics in 2024.
Daley won his first gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics held last year when he and diving partner Matty Lee took out the men's 10m synchronised event.
During those Games, he went viral after being seen knitting while watching other athletes compete, later showing off a white Team GB-themed cardigan that he produced.
What is Tom Daley's net worth?
The diver and TV personality from Devon has a net worth of around £2million, according to the most recent estimate from Spear's magazine.
The wealth management and luxury lifestyle media brand says net worth is calculated using an algorithm, based on publicly available data and resources.
Daley's net worth had previously been reported to be around £3million or even as high as £4million by other sources.
Earnings could come from his diving career, TV appearances, YouTube channel, books and sponsorships, which have included Adidas and Etihad Airways.
His YouTube channel has £1.2million subscribers and he has 3.3million followers on Instagram.
How much does he earn per medal?
Daley has won four Olympics medals, including his gold.
He is also a four-time Commonwealth Games champion and has host of other World, European and British championships medals.
But unlike some countries, Great Britain athletes don't receive prize money for winning medals at the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games, nor are they paid salaries.
However, they do receive an annual funding which can help covers training and travel costs.
This is reported to be between £37,000 to £57,000, depending on the sport or athlete.
Of course, being an Olympic gold medallist or Commonwealth champion can boost the value of sponsorship deals, too.
