Tiger Woods to make golf return next week less than year after car crash

Tiger Woods will make an emotional return to golf alongside 12-year-old son Charlie just nine months after being involved in a single-vehicle collision which left him with broken bones in both of his legs.

The legendary 15-time major championship winner admitted in November that he would never be able to return to golf on a full-time basis after undergoing surgery on open fractures to his lower right leg.

Woods also suffered injuries to his foot and ankle – and has admitted that he had fears that his leg would need to be amputated while in hospital.

The 45-year-old has now announced his return to the course alongside son Charlie at the Father/Son PNC Championship between December 16 and December 19.

Woods tweeted: "Although it’s been a long and challenging year, I am very excited to close it out by competing in the @PNCchampionship with my son Charlie.

"I’m playing as a Dad and couldn’t be more excited and proud."

Having said last month in a chat with Golf Digest: "I don't have to compete and play against the best players in the world to have a great life.

"After my back fusion, I had to climb Mount Everest one more time. I had to do it, and I did. This time around, I don't think I'll have the body to climb Mount Everest and that's OK.

“I can still participate in the game of golf. I can still, if my leg gets OK, click off a tournament here or there.

“But as far as climbing the mountain again and getting all the way to the top, I don't think that's a realistic expectation of me.

“I think something that is realistic is playing the tour one day – never full-time, ever again – but pick and choose, just like Mr (Ben) Hogan did. Pick and choose a few events a year and play around that.”

Tiger and Charlie competed in the father & son tournament back in 2020, but it was Justin Thomas and Mike Thomas who took the crown.

Each of the fathers needs to have won a major championship or The Players Championship to be eligible for an invitation, with kids aged from 11 and up but must not be a touring professional.
