Tiger Woods ruins golf rival Phil Mickelson with just one word after £6m boast

Tiger Woods directed a one-word jibe at golf rival Phil Mickelson after he had made a £6million boast.

Sport icon Woods won the inaugural Player Impact Program (PIP) bonus this week which rewards players for generating positive interest in the American circuit.

That's despite the fact he has barely played since his serious car crash in February 2021.

In fact, the 46-year-old has made just one competitive appearance – an exhibition parent-child tournament last December.

Nevertheless, the 15-time major winner has collected a prize of $8m (£6m) from the PGA Tour, which Mickelson previously incorrectly claimed he was set to receive.

He tweeted in December that he had won the lion's share of the $40m (£30m) prize fund.

But Mickelson actually came second and pocketed $6m (£4.5m).

That presented Woods with a great opportunity to troll his rival, which he took.

He tweeted a screenshot of Mickelson's post where he thanked "all the crazies and real supporters too, who helped me win the PIP" and captioned it "whoops".

Mickelson has faced fierce criticism in recent weeks with his popularity plummeting after making controversial comments about the Saudi-backed Super Golf League.

"They’re scary motherf***ers to get involved with," he said. “We know they killed (Washington Post reporter) Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights.

"They execute people over there for being gay.

"Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates."

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy slammed Mickelson as "naive, selfish, egotistical and ignorant".

He, along with Americans Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas, all received $3.5m (£2.6m) from th PIP.

It is based on metrics measuring a player's ability to generate interest, including internet searches, articles, social media, sponsor exposure and awareness among the US population.
