Shane Warne told his Twitter followers that he was planning to get back into shape just one week before the sporting world was left shaken by his tragic passing at the age of just 52.

The iconic former Australia cricketer, who helped the national side to five Ashes triumphs between 1993 and 2003, died following a suspected heart attack in his Thailand home.

While his emotional final tweet was a fitting tribute to former Aussie wicketkeeper Rod Marsh, a message he sent on Monday (February 28) has been looked back on by emotional fans of Warne.

The legendary spinner, who dated Liz Hurley and was known for his Ball of the Century, had pledged to get back in shape with what he had called operation shred, having chosen to get healthy and step up his exercise routine.

His passing only four days later shows just how precious life is, with all of his followers being left heartbroken by his untimely death.

One wrote with a broken heart emoji: "Life us so unpredictable."

With a second saying: "Gutted to know he still had dreams unfulfilled that he was chasing. Rest In Peace, mate."

A third continued: "Just 4 days ago Warne posted about his plan to get back in shape. Life is so short. RIP"

Warne starred for Australia cricket between 1992 and 2007 – and is widely regarded as one of the best bowlers in the history of the sport having taken 708 test wickets

Former footballer Gary Lineker wrote in tribute: "Terribly saddened and shocked to hear the news that Shane Warne has died. The greatest spin bowler of all time. Can’t quite believe it. RIP Shane."

With Piers Morgan saying: "Absolutely devastated to hear that ⁦Shane Warne has died from a heart attack aged just 52. He was a genius cricketer, a supreme entertainer, a fantastic bloke and a great loyal friend for many years. Just gutting news. RIP Warnie, I loved every minute in your company."

As recently as January, Warne reflected on his international career with great fondness.

He wrote on Instagram: "30 years ago on this day way back in the 1991/92 season – I made my debut for Australia!

"I'm so grateful for the opportunity to have played for Oz, and with a great group of men too.

"We became the best side in the world for 15 years through hard work & sacrifice – but did it together – which was very very special."
