After securing a spot in this year’s European Ryder Cup team automatically, Lee Westwood travelled to Whistling Straits on the back of a solid two years of qualifying but will be without his usual caddie, and wife Helen Storey.

Storey has been on the bag regularly for her newly married husband since her caddying debut at the 2018 Made In Denmark competition, after Billy Foster – Westwood’s usual right-hand man – took a break from the course.

And, the Englishman’s partner has consistently been on the bag since, as the pair have teamed up at a number of major events including previous Masters tournaments, and Open Championships.

However, this will not be the case at this year’s Ryder Cup, as the 48-year-old confirmed his son Sam will take the reins instead.

This will not be the first time Westwood Jnr has been on bag duties for his dad, after the father-son duo teamed up at Augusta back in April for this year’s Masters on the youngster’s 18th birthday.

This came after the 25-time European Tour winner outlined a two-year promise to his son, revealing back in 2019 that he would have Sam caddie alongside him if he broke back into the world’s top 50, and thus secure a place at the famous event at Augusta.

And, Westwood Jnr clearly made a good impression during his time on the bag, as his dad confirmed he would return to another huge event in the golfing calendar, at the Ryder Cup in Wisconsin.

Speaking about the honour of having his 18-year-old on the bag at the pinnacle of matchplay golf, Westwood said: “Forget The Masters, this is on a totally different scale.

“Sam is as nervous as a kitten and I think this is going to be a rare case of a player trying to keep his caddie calm. But he’ll be fine once I’ve hit my first shot.

“It’s been a welcome distraction for me and an added incentive — not that you need one at a Ryder Cup. After all, what dad doesn’t want to impress his son?"

The Westwood duo, alongside their European team-mates, are looking to retain the Ryder Cup following their emphatic win at Le Golf National in 2018.

Europe face a daunting task against their American rivals, with eight of their team in the world's top 10 heading into the action at Whistling Straits.
