Ronnie ‘The Rocket’ O’Sullivan has revealed his plan to win an eighth World Snooker Championship crown next year so he can be regarded as the greatest of all time. The Rocket, who turned 47 this week, equalled Stephen Hendry’s record of seven Crucible crowns after dominating last season’s World Championship in Sheffield.

The snooker icon has built on his success this season winning the Champion of Champions and the inaugural Hong Kong Masters. He is bidding for a third crown at the English Open next week taking place between December 12-18. O’Sullivan confirmed his intent to go for an eighth world crown in April.

“If my game is in good shape I’ll be going for my eighth world title,” revealed the world number one. “I’m definitely going to play in the World Championships this season.

“I’ve got four or five more years to go for it, but hopefully my game is ready for this season.” Despite his form this season O’Sullivan said he had ‘winged it’ at times and said technically “I’m not great”.

Five of O’Sullivan’s seven world championships crowns came prior to 2013. The star was surprised at his form in last season’s competition running out 18-13 winner against Judd Trump in the final. “I didn’t think I’d win it again to be honest, it was a real shock,” admitted O’Sullivan.

“I put everything into last season, I gave it my all, probably more than I’ve ever usually done. Before the World Champs I probably up my practice to 20 hours a week for about six tournaments before the season.

“I really start to crank it up, both on the table and to get mentally prepared because it [the tournament] takes so much out of you. But last season I had a documentary crew with me, so I didn’t want to embarrass myself.” O’Sullivan will begin his English Open bid against Belgium teenager Ben Mertens on Monday at the Brentwood Leisure Centre.

O’Sullivan won the English Open in 2016 and reached the semi-final last year and on one other occasion. The Rocket comes into the event with a healthy lead of 211,000 points over Trump in the world rankings.
