Team GB scooped another impressive haul of six medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Tuesday to ensure their best ever start to a Games. Britain’s only gold medal on day four went to swimmer Tom Dean, who sealed a narrow victory over team-mate and silver-medallist Duncan Scott in the men’s 200m freestyle.
The result marked Britain’s fourth gold of the Games to occupy fifth place in the overall medal table, behind the Russian Olympic Committee, China, the United States and hosts Japan.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, triathlete Georgia Taylor-Brown recovered from a puncture at the end of her bike leg to claim silver, with Bermuda’s Kate Duffy taking first place.
A trio of bronze medals were also won by Brits, with the women’s gymnastics team sealing a first Olympic medal for 93 years.
Simone Biles of the United States, who is widely considered to be the greatest female gymnast of all time, was forced to pull out of the event with a mental health issue.
Meanwhile, Charlotte Dujardin’s bronze in dressage saw her become Britain’s joint-most decorated female Olympian, and Bianca Walkden matched her own result from the previous Games in Rio de Janeiro to claim third place in the taekwondo event.
The three-time world champion defeated Poland’s Aleksandra Kowalczuk in the bronze medal match to bring Team GB’s overall tally up to 13.

UK Sport have set a medal target of between 45 and 70 for this year’s Games, and the fast start made by Britain’s athletes suggests that another fruitful campaign could be on the cards to follow up the 67-strong haul of 2016.
There will be plenty of opportunities to keep up the early momentum on Wednesday, with rowers Graeme Thomas and John Collins in action in the men’s double sculls event.
There is also British interest in the women’s four and men’s four, the finals of which will follow at 1.50am and 2.10am respectively.
Meanwhile, divers Jack Laugher and Dan Goodfellow will go for gold in the men’s 3m synchro at 7.00am before Dujardin bids for individual dressage glory at 9.30am.
