Olympic champion David Rudisha involved in horror plane crash

Olympian David Rudisha is fortunate to be alive after the former 800-metre superstar reportedly survived a plane crash.

Images began to circulate on social media on Saturday, which purportedly show the Kenyan running icon stood among the wreckage of a small plane. Rudisha can be seen huddled next to several other men in one photo, with the upturned aircraft lying on its roof in the background.

Details of the alleged incident are still hazy, though Rudisha appeared unharmed despite the severity of the crash. Journalist James Smart tweeted Rudisha "is safe" after he was seen posing alongside the wreckage in another picture.

It was reported the light aircraft went down near the Amboseli National Park following heavy rain in the area. The BBC's Lynne Wachira tweeted Rudisha was en route to Chyulu Hills at the time having just attended the Maasai Olympics.

The 33-year-old is one of Africa's most beloved athletes after winning back-to-back gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics in London and Rio de Janeiro, respectively. Rudisha has never formerly confirmed his retirement from running but has failed to figure among major competitions in recent years.

This latest incident isn't the first time Rudisha has been lucky to escape from a potentially devastating crash unharmed. The Kenyan was driving to his home in Kilgoris in August 2019 when he was involved in a head-on collision with a bus.

It was reported a tyre on Rudisha's car burst and caused him to swerve into the public transport. Fans were shocked to see photos of the wreck at the time, begging the question as to how the celebrity came away without any serious injury.

Rudisha won Olympic gold at London 2012 before successfully defending his title in Brazil four years later. His winning time of one minute and 40.91 seconds in the former remains the world record in the men's 800 metres.
