Mo Farah wanted to cry in final London Marathon as he opens up on retirement

  • An emotional Sir Mo Farah "wanted to cry" during his final London Marathon – as the legendary Olympian took to the streets of London for the final time.

    Farah earned a top-10 finish, completing the course in two hours, ten minutes and eight seconds. However, Farah admitted his body was beginning to give up on him, he told the BBC: "London has been so great to me over the years.

    "And I wanted to be here to say thank you to the crowd. Training went well, and I was confident, and I thought I could do between 2:05 and 2:07 but you never know with the marathon.

    "I gave it my all but my body just wasn’t responding and that’s when you know when it’s time to call it a day. Part of me was wanting to cry. The people were amazing, even in the rain to line the streets and that’s what this is all about.

    "It’s what has kept me going for so long throughout my career. I will miss that feeling, I am emotional today."

    However, Farah isn't quite done with distance running yet, and he added he will retire after the Great North Run in September.

    Farah moved to long-distance running after he fame for Team GB, winning gold medals at both the London and Rio Olympics.

    Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum won the men’s race – setting a blistering time of two hours, one minute and 25 seconds, a London Marathon record.

    Kiptum's time almost beat the world record, which was set by Eliud Kipchoge at the 2022 Berlin Marathon. And the Kenyan finished three minutes ahead of compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor and Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola.
