Masters leader Hideki Matsuyama’s ‘secret wife’ left reporters astounded
Japanese golf star Hideki Matsuyama has never been an attention-seeker in the media.
And the Masters leader’s secret marriage showed just that when he left reporters stunned back in 2017.
The 29-year-old, who has a four-shot lead heading into the final round at Augusta on Sunday, is about to be thrust into the limelight.
His sensational display on Saturday in the back nine saw Justin Rose slip away from claiming the famous green jacket.
Matsuyama already has one arm in the sleeves, and he will be desperate to celebrate with his ‘secret wife’.
Wife Mei will be cheering him on from home, and nobody even knew the former world No2 was married at one stage.
In 2017, reporters were left stunned when Matsuyama revealed not only was he already married, but the Masters favourite had given birth to their first child.
He had enjoyed a strong season that year, winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and tying for second at the US Open.
By August 2017, Matsuyama had gained more media attention and suddenly announced he had already wed Mei seven months prior in January.
They had welcomed daughter Kanna in the July too, but Matsuyama had not been intentionally quiet about his private life.
Speaking at the 2017 Northern Trust Open, Matsuyama said: "No one really asked me if I was married, so I didn’t have to answer that question.
"But I felt that after the PGA would be a good time, because our baby is born and I thought that would be a good time to let everyone know."

There are no public photos of the family, clearly preferring to allow Mastuyama’s focus in the media to remain on golf.
And his mind on Sunday will be fully focused on the job in hand.
Four players are on seven under par, four shots behind Matsuyama.
American pair Will Zalatoris and Xander Schauffele are level with Englishman Rose and Aussie Marc Leishman.
