Luka Doncic contract breakdown: How much will the Mavericks star be making per year?
The Mavericks on Monday renewed their investment in superstar Luka Doncic with a five-year, $207 million extension.
ESPN’s Bobby Marks reports the extension is worth $207.1 million, based off 30 percent of the projected $119 million salary cap for the 2022-23 season (and using guidelines for the NBA’s designated rookie supermax extension). He also reported the following as the year-by-year pay breakdown:
ESPN reports Mavericks leaders on Monday landed in Slovenia — where Doncic is staying after the 2021 Tokyo Olympics — to formally present him the contract; Doncic confirmed his extension in a statement released to ESPN, also announcing future plans for his foundation:
“Today is a dream come true,” Doncic said. “The game of basketball has given me so much and has taken me to so many amazing places. I am humbled and excited to remain in Dallas as part of the Mavericks and appreciate the support of my fans.
“Along with this new contract, I am also happy to announce that I am increasing my efforts and focusing on expanding The Luka Dončić Foundation. My foundation is an international nonprofit that will give back to places that mean so much to me like my home country of Slovenia, as well as the communities in North Texas.
“(I’m) happy to share in partnership with 2K Foundations we are unveiling two basketball courts here in Slovenia soon. We are refurbishing my childhood courts where I learned and practiced the game. The opportunity for kids to play on the same courts and pursue the same dreams I had is something I’m excited about.”
Doncic will reportedly hold a news conference regarding his extension on Tuesday.
Dallas’ offer guarantees the 22-year-old, one of the league’s most successful players ever for his age, will remain the longtime centerpiece in Dallas. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Doncic is only the second player since the NBA-ABA merger to be named All-NBA first team multiple times before their 23rd birthday (he accomplished the feat in his second and third seasons in the league after being named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2018-19). The other is Kevin Durant, who accomplished the feat in his third and fourth NBA seasons.
Why is Luka Doncic eligible for the rookie supermax extension?
Doncic is the first player since the NBA’s “Derrick Rose Rule” was implemented in 2011 to qualify for a rookie supermax extension; the rule, which was implemented after a third-year Rose won NBA MVP, allows young players to earn a higher percentage of a team’s salary cap: 30 percent, instead of 25.
Per Spotrac, Doncic has earned that percentage because 1) he is entering the fourth year of his original rookie deal and 2) was named first-team All-NBA in each of the prior two seasons.
The Mavericks’ investment is well worth it, considering what he has accomplished each of his three seasons: Doncic — who has never averaged fewer than 21.1 points per game a season — averages 25.7 points, 8.4 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game for his career. That includes a 45.7 field goal percentage and 33.1 percentage beyond the arc.
Those numbers are even better in the postseason: In two series (one each in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons), Doncic averages 33.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 9.5 assists per game. He has shot 49.4 percent from the field and 39.2 percent from 3 during those two series, both first-round exits to the Clippers.
