Lauren Williams has won Team GB’s fourth gold medal on the first Monday of Tokyo 2020 after beating Croatia’s Matea Jelic in the -67kg taekwondo final. Williams was guaranteed a medal on her Olympics debut in the -67kg taekwondo after beating Ivory Coast’s Ruth Gbagbi in the semi final earlier in the day.

Just a few hours later and she was back in the ring to face Jelic, who defeated her just a few months ago.

Regarded as the two best fighters in the category, it was always going to be a close encounter.

And the encounter got off to a frenetic start as Williams opened up an early lead after the first round.

But Jelic evened things up in the second round with both fighters on 10 points apiece.

That carried over into the third and final round until Williams opened up a slender lead.

The 22-year-old was just 20 seconds away holding a five-point lead over Jelic.

However, the Croatia taekwondo star came back in a flurry, putting the British star on the backfoot.

A head shot from Jelic drew them level with Williams then being penalised as the former went on to take the lead.

And she managed to hold on before the klaxon blew as Jelic ran away screaming in delight.
