Kyren Wilson clarifies British Open viewers’ confusion after wearing glove

Snooker star Kyren Wilson has finally explained why he has worn a single black glove during tournaments. Wilson has left fans baffled after recently adopting the accessory but revealed that it is due to the sticky tables on the snooker circuit.

The World No 8 wears the glove on his bridge hand, helping him set up his shots. But he does not wear a right-handed glove.

Snooker fans were left confused by Wilson’s use of the glove at the British Open this week, but the reason has now become clear. The 31-year-old has explained that tables have started to become sticky, prompting him to use a glove to ‘reduce the variables’

“It’s just for the simple fact of trying to reduce the variables,” he explained to the Sun at the British Open.

“I’ve found the conditions very sticky lately which has been hard to push the cue through my bridge hand, so I thought I’d try the glove to help improve that.”

Wilson remained coy on whether he would wear the glove again. Asked about fans wanting to see the glove in future matches, he quipped: “You’ll have to leave them guessing!”

Cloth on the black glove covers the thumb and two fingers on Wilson’s left hand, which he uses to support his cue on the baize. But it was not enough to help the snooker ace go far at the British Open.

After dubbing his triumph against Mark Allen on Wednesday “glovely jubbly”, Wilson was then knocked out of the tournament on Thursday. He lost against the impressive Barry Hawkins in an all-English affair.

Wilson might be extra careful with his marginal gains after losing at the World Championship earlier this year having dropped his cue. He was signing autographs outside the Crucible when his case dropped from his grasp, making a weight come loose.

After losing against John Higgins, Wilson said: “That’s not the reason I lost. After the first session I always like to spend time with the fans, there were lots of fans outside that wanted autographs and pictures, unfortunately I dropped my cue trying to sign one of the books.

“I think one of the weights are loose, so it’s just the fiddly little nipping shots that were tough, but playing anything with power were fine, so no excuse there.

“It’s just frustrating. I feel like I’m so close all of the time, I’m always knocking on the door, I don’t think it’ll be long until you see me doing that to these great players. But while they’re still around I need to find a way of beating them. That’s the difference.”
