IPL auction forced to be suspended after auctioneer collapses on stage

The Indian Premier League auction was suspended on Saturday morning after auctioneer Hugh Edmeades suddenly collapsed on stage.

Edmeades was conducting the IPL auction event for the fourth successive season in Bengalaru at 3:30pm local time while overseeing the bidding on the third set of players when he collapsed.

The 62-year-old was tended to by paramedics while staff from the attending teams watched on in horror.

Proceedings were temporarily halted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who later revealed he was in “stable” condition and that he had collapsed from the podium due to low blood pressure.

The IPL have since confirmed Edmeades suffered from Postural Hypotension, leaving him light-headed and faint.

Their statement read: “Mr Hugh Edmeades, the IPL Auctioneer, had an unfortunate fall due to Postural Hypotension during the IPL Auction this afternoon.

“The medical team attended to him immediately after the incident and he is stable. Mr. Charu Sharma will continue with the auction proceedings today.”

The auction was resumed after an interval of just over an hour, while Sharma wished Edmeades well.

He said: “Our hearts and our wishes do go out to Hugh Edmeades, who was taken a little unwell.

“From all accounts he is getting much better, he’s stable and that’s good news.”

The early rounds of bidding on the opening day saw Kolkata Knight Riders buy India batsman Shreyas Iyer for 122.5million Indian rupees (£1.2million).

Jason Roy was the only England player to be selected before the auction’s suspension, joining Gujarat Titans, while Australia test captain Pat Cummins joined Iyer in Kolkata for 72.50 million rupees (£710,000).

Meanwhile, England spinner Adil Rashid was unfortunate not to get picked up by a team.
