Golfer with £50m winnings to miss birth of child to try and chase £14m payday
Golfing star Jason Day has elected to miss the birth of his child to try and chase one of golf's most lucrative paydays.
Day is expecting his fifth child with wife Ellie – who wants her beau to pursue the FedEx Cup championship crown at the East Lake Country Club in Atlanta, Georgia.
And speaking to Golf Digest ahead of the tournament, Day said: “She said, ‘You’re not likely to make it back in time if I do go into labour’."
“We’re having a home birth. She said I may as well just play the tournament and try to win.” The FedEx Cup offers a lucrative purse of £14million.

However, Day is used to winning big and he has career earnings of £50million. Day's most lucrative year came in 2015, when he earned a reported £7.15million from competitions, the 16th most of any golfer that season.
And while he hasn't hit the heights of 2015, Day still bagged an eye-watering £5.5million last season.

Day added: "I’m just hoping that Ellie holds out another week or two weeks and I can be there and spend some time with my family. I think if this was my first [child], I’d be a little bit more nervous about it. I’m pretty excited for our family to grow."
The ex-PGA Championship winner has experienced similar situations before, and in 2012 he missed the Open Championship for the arrival of his firstborn son, Dash.
