Glamorous pit girl climbs wall to celebrate with team and suffers bad injury

A pit girl has spoken of her horror after she suffered a bizarre injury during a motorsport race at Brands Hatch on Sunday. Sophie Wright had travelled to the circuit for the final race of the British Tour Car Championship (BTCC) as part of her job. And in marking the team’s victory, she may have gone over the top in her celebrations after being taken to hospital with a bad injury.

Pit girls and grid girls may be a thing of the past as far as Formula 1 fans are concerned after they were outlawed before the 2018 season. However, it is very much still present in other motorsport categories including BTCC.

Ms Wright, who is by her own definition a DJ, presenter and writer, works as a pit girl for BTCC races with driver Stephen Jelley and West Surrey Racing (WSR).

But even with the season finishing at Brands Hatch, she may not be back on the racetrack for some time after sustaining a fracture in her leg, which required medical treatment at Kings College Hospital.

She suffered the nasty injury when she climbed up onto the metal barriers of the pit wall and fell off awkwardly, leaving her with a broken femur – the thigh bone – and in so much agony that she needed morphine to reduce the pain.

She took to social media on Tuesday to provide an update on her condition, including images of her in hospital, before sending a message of gratitude to medical staff and members of the racing team for assisting her.

“HOW IT STARTED vs HOW IT’S GOING…,” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Pole position- changed into trainers- climbed pit wall to celebrate win- fell off pitwall- broken femur- lots of morphine.

“And most importantly lots of AMAZING medics, mechanics, crew, team members, friends, Marshals! Love u guys xx.”

Wright’s team, 16-time BTCC champions WSR, posted a tribute to their wounded pit girl after confirming the incident had occurred in the aftermath of the race, which was won by its driver Jake Hill.

“Sadly @DJSoWright, one of our awesome #BTCC grid team, had an accident in pitlane while celebrating our season-ending win yesterday,” they wrote. “Please join us in wishing her an ultra-speedy recovery”, before adding a ‘strength’ emoji.

Ms Wright updated her fans on Tuesday by revealing she is set to undergo surgery to fix the damage to her femur- and asked for ‘good vibes’ after admitting she was ‘scared’.

Touring car icon Jason Plato was among those to respond with his own brief message, writing on X: “Good luck Sophie”.
