Laura Kenny and Katie Archibald made history in their dominant display to win gold in the women’s madison on Friday. The madison was making it’s first return to the Olympic schedule since Beijing 2008, but it was the first time a women’s event was taking place.

Great Britain were being represented by Archibald and Kenny and were among the favourites to challenge for gold.

But nobody prediced the British pair to dominate the race in the fashion they did.

The 120-lap race comprised of a sprint every 10 laps with Kenny and Archibald working better than any other pair.

They won 10 of the 12 sprints between them to win gold by an incredible 43-point margin.

Nobody came close to challenging Archibald and Kenny, with the latter making history in becoming the first British female to win gold at three Olympics.

She also joins Charlotte Dujardin with a total of six Olypmic medals as the most decorated British female Olympian of all time.

Sir Chris Hoy was blown away by the performance of Archibald and Kenny.

“Even for an event as unpredictable as the madison it was the most wonderfully boring team madison I’ve ever seen – the most assured confident race I’ve ever seen at this level – it was outstanding,” he said.

“They went out and dominated form the word go to win the first sprint – they won by three or four bike lengths every time – they had speed, tactics and complete control.

“All their rivals were fighting for silver or bronze early on. They took that race by the scruff of the neck.”
