England hero Monty Panesar uses LinkedIn in search of new opportunity in cricket
England hero Monty Panesar is on the lookout for new opportunities in cricket five years after he left Northamptonshire in the summer of 2016.
The left-arm spinner became a fan favourite after making his international debut in 2006, going on to take 167 Test wickets while posting a bowling average of 34.71.
Monty, 38, also featured for both Sussex and Essex during a successful career domestically, and is now looking to utilise his knowledge and experience in the sport he loves.
As reported last summer, Monty wrote to all 18 counties back in 2018 to offer his services to no avail.
As spotted by the Upshot newsletter, Panesar said that he was "seeking cricket opportunities" on LinkedIn, alongside a a snap of him performing in the Road Safety World Series.
“I feel like I’ve got unfinished business with cricket,” Panesar told the Guardian in July.
“I’m probably in better shape now than when I played because I’ve been working with a personal trainer. I’d love to play professionally again, so I’m definitely going to give it my best.”
“I think that sort of player-coach thing where if there’s a young spinner bowling with me, they would learn so much being with me – how I train and bowl; I would be there helping them.
“I hope there’s a coach who can see the value – ‘If we have Monty for a couple of years, by the time he leaves the other spinners will be really good.’”
Monty was in the headlines in 2019 for what turned out to be a nightmare appearance on Celebrity Mastermind, during which he thought the 1819 poem describing the season of Autumn was Oliver Twist.

He told the Mail of the encounter: “Car crash doesn't do it justice. It was like the Titanic ramming the Hindenburg. In the moments afterwards I was angry, because it was so embarrassing.
“When it went out I was with my family and I didn't want to watch, but for me to say Oliver Twist was, I suppose, why there's only one Monty Panesar. It's my character, it's why people remember me.
“Hardly anyone will remember who won that particular episode of Celebrity Mastermind. They'll remember me all right.“
