Darts LIVE with Fallon Sherrock under pressure as rival in tears at Ally Pally
Michael Van Gerwen previews World Darts Championship
The 2023-24 World Darts Championship is very much underway with 96 players having started out at Alexandra Palace this week hoping to win the huge £500,000 prize on January 3rd.
Michael Smith is the reigning champion looking to make it back-to-back triumphs but there is an abundance of competition for the Englishman.
Luke Humphries is the bookies’ favourite but Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price and Gary Anderson are others alongside Smith who must not be written off.
Express Sport provides LIVE updates from the Worlds below…
Fallon Sherrock under pressure
Fallon Sherrock takes to the stage today after boyfriend Cameron Menzies was put out by Dave Chisnall last night.
And there’s plenty of household pressure on for the 29-year-old – one of only two female qualifiers for the Worlds this year.
That’s because the ‘Queen of the Palace’ has agreed to a bet with Menzies.
Whoever gets knocked out the earliest cooks the turkey on Christmas day this year in their house. Menzies made it through to round two and so Sherrock needs to win her first-round match today to avoid the cooking duties.
Menzies said: “Usually, I’m up in Scotland with the family but this year I’ll be down in England with Fallon. Basically the first one knocked out of the Worlds has to do the turkey!”
Hughes in tears on the oche
Jamie Hughes was left in tears last night after claiming his first ever World Championship victory at the fifth time of trying.
The 37-year-old defeated David Cameron (not that one!) 3-1 and after a double eight to clinch the win, was moved to tears.
He had lost all of his four previous first-round matches and said: “It’s absolute relief, but not just relief because there’s been a lot of frustration over the year.
“I’m just so, so happy to finally get a win on that stage.”
