Italian athlete Alberto Nonino finished last in the 400-metre race at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championship after suffering a major wardrobe malfunction.

Decathlon ace Nonino started brightly in the 400m race, going past two rivals on the last bend, before he was forced to slow down on the main straight to cover his dignity, which had made a break for it on the home straight.

Nonino was filmed holding his crotch and rearranging his shorts several times as he fell down the order and crossed the line in last place.

Journalist David Sanchez de Castro, who was reporting on the event, bluntly revealed the reason behind Nonino’s embarrassing race, which saw the chasing pack breeze past him.

He tweeted: "World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia.

"Last series of the 400 meters decathlon. The Italian Alberto Nonino in lane five begins very well but crosses the finishing line last. He had his penis out, literally."

He later added more explanation for followers who were left confused by events that sounded incredible with no context.

Adding: “Perhaps I’ve explained myself poorly. His penis escaped out of the side of his shorts and he had to hold it because it wasn’t allowing him to run properly which is normal when your dongle is swinging from side to side."

The Spanish-speaking press were also quick to claim that Nonino’s slow time of 51.57 seconds was the result of him opting to run without underpants.

Nonino himself appeared to confirm the cause of his problems on Instagram, he wrote: “I just want to talk to you a little bit about the rumpus there’s been on blogs and social media in general. I’m conscious it was obviously an accident and I’d like to tell you I’m aware of the reaction and you don’t need to send me the links to the blogs out there.

"I’m trying to laugh about it now but immediately afterwards I felt terrible and I’m thankful to my friends and family for helping me get over what happened a few hours later."

Thankfully, Nonino was able to laugh about the situation at the end of the tournament, as he added a laughing emoji and wrote in a post at the conclusion of the games: “I can't wait to do another experience like this and maybe I'll see some more interesting articles on the newspapers."

It’s not the first time an athlete has fallen foul of a horrendous wardrobe malfunction after World Athletics champion Steve Cram once accidentally showed the late Queen his crown jewels after his shorts split open during a Commonwealth Games 1,500m race.
