‘Amazing’: NBA star breaks 57-year record
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has overtaken basketball icon Wilt Chamberlain as the franchise’s most prolific point-scorer in NBA history.
Chamberlain registered 17,783 points during a formidable six-year stint for the Warriors, his record standing since 1964.
Curry finally surpassed the 13-time NBA All-Star during the first quarter of Tuesday’s NBA game against the Denver Nuggets in San Francisco — he needed an additional 316 games to equal Chamberlain’s tally.

The 33-year-old raised both arms in the air after reaching the milestone with a layup, blowing a kiss to the heavens.
The entire Warriors bench stood and applauded Curry, with coach Steve Kerr giving the three-time NBA champion a congratulatory hug.
HISTORY FOR STEPH CURRY‼️
He's now the all-time leading scorer in Warriors history, passing Wilt Chamberlain ? pic.twitter.com/3nYqrHEs8t
“It’s just an incredible feat,” Kerr said before the game.
“Passing Wilt in anything statistically is sort of remarkable because his name is all over the record books. So the fact that Steph is about to break that record is just incredible and obviously a testament to what he’s done here in his 12 years and impact he’s made.
“I don’t know if breaking that record even tells the story because what Steph brings goes so far beyond points. It’s the impact on his teammates, the community, the organisation, the style of play, just how unique he is.
“As an individual, he has changed the game, inspired all the young NBA point guards who have come up to be much better shooters. He has changed the game, so as awesome as this accomplishment is, passing Wilt, it’s just one of many for Steph.”
Curry scored 53 points against the Nuggets, shooting 14-for-24 from the floor. He also recorded six rebounds and four assists in 36 minutes, helping Golden State secure a 116-107 win.
It was the 18th time Curry has knocked down at least 10 three-pointers in an NBA game — teammate Klay Thompson is second on the all-time list with five.
The seven-time NBA All-Star is currently averaging 30.4 points per game in the 2020/21 season, which betters his previous career-best of 30.1 in 2015/16.
It's hilarious how every time a NBA player does something that invokes the name Wilt Chamberlain, all you do is gain more appreciation for Wilt. Steph Curry just became the Warriors' all-time leading scorer in his 745th game for the franchise….Wilt set the old mark in 429 games
Steph Curry just passed Wilt Chamberlain as the all time leading Warriors scorer. Amazing. Got 19 points in the first quarter.
Steph Curry is a joke. In the best way possible. It’s silly
“(Chamberlain has) got a lot of buckets,” Curry told ESPN earlier this week.
“Obviously he’s a legend and remains (one) across the whole league, but obviously wearing a Warriors uniform and having been here my whole career, it’s pretty crazy.
“So I got a couple more points to score — hopefully some more wins in the process — but it is just a wild thought in general.
“To know where it started out and all that’s happened over the course of my career … that is a pretty significant milestone.”
Thursday’s match was marred by an injury to Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray, with his left knee buckling while attempting a layup late in the fourth quarter.
Golden State’s season record improves to 26-28 — they will next travel to Oklahoma Coty to face the Thunder on Thursday AEDT.
