UFC fighter Yair Rodriguez shows off swollen foot after brutal five-round war
Yair Rodriguez has shared images of his gruesome injury following his defeat to Max Holloway at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas.
The Mexican lost on points after five intense rounds but was left with plenty of battle scars.
Both fighters were taken for checks by a doctor with Holloway seeking out Rodriguez as he waited for him in the back of an ambulance.
"Yair, you frickin' animal," Holloway said as he approached his opponent. The pair shared compliments before taking a picture together.
Rodriguez's left leg was shown to have swollen as a result of his efforts in his first fight in two years.
His foot seemed to bear the brunt of the pain though as it suffered with incredible swelling, which was seen in an image shared on social media.
He and Holloway combined to land 389 significant strikes over 25 minutes, the third highest in the organisation's history with each man pocketing a $50,000 bonus for their efforts.
"Insane," UFC president Dana White said. "It was one of the best fights I've ever seen."
Rodriguez said after the fight: "I came really prepared for this fight. Max is an amazing fighter. He was better than me tonight."
Holloway aded: "All the love to Yair. This guy’s a beast. I feel great. His boxing’s pretty good. He was moving like a boxer but then he was throwing elbows.
"Fair game to him; this guy’s a freaking beast, that’s why I wanted to fight him."
The win for Holloway could grant him a third shot against Alexander Volkanovski having lost his last two bouts by narrow margins.
However a possible rematch with Conor McGregor, a man he lost to in 2013, is also on the cards.
"We’ll see what happens,” Holloway added. “I got a win over the 155lb champion [Charles Oliveira], we’ve got Alex and stuff. I’m on the shortlist for Conor McGregor.
"To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best and the best is ‘Blessed.’ They can come after me, let’s get it."
White confirmed he will look to book the trilogy title fight when he said: "It’s one of those things; it was razor thin, he just comes in and puts on a performance like this.
"This is just a guy that Volkanovski’s going to have to just him out of the way and do it again."
