Nate Diaz sends message to Conor McGregor on anniversary of rematch
Nate Diaz has claimed that Conor McGregor is 'still far behind' on the five-year anniversary of their rematch clash at UFC 2020.
The pair clashed twice in 2016, with Diaz coming out on top in the opening duel between the pair with a choke submission victory over his opponent shocking the world handing the 'Notorious' his first career defeat, before the Irishman got his revenge with a decision victory over the distance in a historic bout later in 2016.
Since their tremendous August match-up that even eclipsed their initial meeting earlier in the year, Diaz and McGregor have always been linked with their rivalry continuing over various feuds in addition to continuous rumours that the pair will battle in a trilogy bout so the 'winner takes all'.
And the infamous American fighter has delivered a message to his two-time former opponent stating that he is 'still far behind' despite the Irishman winning their second bout.
“He got finished off with a choke. That last fight didn’t even thangs out. He’s still far behind but it’s Gucci," Diaz posted on social media marking the anniversary of their clash.
McGregor is currently facing time out of the cage as he was defeated in his most recent bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 suffering a broken leg injury in the opening round, with referee Herb Dean forced to end the contest.
This handed McGregor his third defeat in his last four fights, losing consecutively to Poirier and ending the trilogy on the losing side at lightweight, and he will hope for a much better outcome should he face his old rival Diaz for a third time later in his career.
With his next moves uncertain, McGregor has previously stated his intentions to complete a trilogy with Diaz, but is uncertain at what weight depending on their respective strengths at the time of any potential bout.
Will McGregor fight Diaz in a trilogy bout? Comment below
"I’d love to compete against Diaz," McGregor told The Mac Life in January.
"We will compete again – if that happens at lightweight, you know, for a title that would be something special also.
"So, there’s many great options that are in the works and let’s see what happens. I am ready.”
And McGregor's manager Audie Attar added his opinion on the chance of a trilogy bout with Diaz in the future stating that he can definitely 'see it happening'.
"The trilogy fight is going to happen," Attar added. "Conor publicly said it has to happen and I know both fighters intend to make it happen.
"I think it's just gonna happen in the near future, just not next, immediately."
His recovery from injury has begun after receiving surgery on his broken leg, and the Irishman is reportedly pondering a move into boxing touting a potential training session with Canelo Alvarez upon the end of his rehabilitation.
Although he has also revealed his plans to move up to welterweight and take on current UFC champion Kamaru Usman for his belt, also considering a first venture into middleweight in the future comparing his fighting size to Kelvin Gastelum.
