Conor McGregor ‘has accepted the offer to coach in the next season of The Ultimate Fighter’.
The Irishman, who has been out of action since July 2021 after breaking his leg, recently spoke of his interest in the role as he prepares to make a comeback later this year.
Tony Ferguson would be coaching the other corner and the pair would then fight at the end of the series. According to Irish publication, Severe MMA, McGregor has accepted the offer to take part.
Conor McGregor revealed on Thursday he has been offered to return to The Ultimate Fighter (pictured here during his time on the reality show in 2015)
He has not fought since the brutal leg break he suffered against Dustin Poirier back in 2021
McGregor first teased the idea of his participation last week, having previously coached against Uriah Faber on the hit show back in 2015.
‘This is a snap from the original Ultimate Fighter house. Where I coached vs. Urijah Faber,’ he said on Instagram.
‘This photo was just before the show tho. It was right before I won my first world title beating Urijah team mate Chad Mendes around.
‘I then went on to coach the famous fight show straight after the fight. With a big black eye and a gash, my tricolor, and my new and first ever UFC gold belt, I waltzed into the notorious fight gym in Las Vegas.
Tony Ferguson also revealed he has been asked to serve as a coach for an upcoming season
‘The slickest suits and shouts the show had ever seen before. On top of the silverware. And I coached my team to victory. Crazy. Some journey. I have just been offered to coach this role again.
‘I like it. It is full immersion which is needed. I see fighters lining up. I know whats ahead I been ready motherf*****s. #StayReady.’
The Ultimate Fighter is a reality TV show in America and an MMA competition set up by the UFC.
It features several professional MMA fighters living together in Las Vegas, with the UFC camera crew following them around as they train an compete against each other for a large cash prize and a chance to compete in the UFC.
Each season features either up to two weight classes in the tournament and the coaches of the rival teams fight each other at the end.
McGregor has only won one fight since 2016 but would start as favourite over Ferguson
Ferguson, who has lost his last five fights on a dreadful and alarming deterioration, has his own history with the reality show.
He earned his place in the UFC by winning the 13th season of The Ultimate Fighter by defeating Ramsey Nijem in 2011.
Despite his recent slide, Ferguson would be fighting somewhat of an unknown quantity. For all McGregor’s glorious past, he has won only once since 2016 and it remains to be seen what level he is currently operating at.
However, both men are among the most recognisable and marketable in the organization so coaching roles against each other on the new series make perfect sense.
Dana White featured McGregor’s post on his Instagram story last week and it appears to be a matter of time before an official announcement is made.
