Former UFC champion Michael Bisping’s son wants to make MMA debut
Michael Bisping has revealed his son wants to make his MMA debut after catching the bug when he cornered his friend in a recent fight.
Callum Bisping is a high-level amateur wrestler and has recently won tournaments in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and now wants to make the transition to mixed martial arts, the sport where his father made history as the first British UFC champion.
And now training with Urijah Faber's 'Team Alpha Male', where the likes of former champion Cody Garbrandt does his fight camps, Bisping Jr could follow in his dad's footsteps.
"Yesterday, laid by the pool, Father's Day, relaxing, he calls up," Bisping said on his podcast 'Believe You Me'. "Because he is getting more and more involved, he trains at Team Alpha Male.
"Now he's won a couple of Jiu-Jitsu tournaments recently and obviously he's a good wrestler.
"He said 'I cornered my buddy in a MMA match on Saturday night and he absolutely destroyed his opponent… I know I can beat the crap out of him'.
"And he said, 'Dad, would you train me for a fight?'"
But it will be hard for the younger Bisping to make a name for himself that isn't overshadowed by his father who is now a respected pundit and commentator.
And his father acknowledged this fact, jokingly adding: "When he does get there, guess what? There's only f***ing one highlander and that's me.
"His career will pale into insignificance compared to mine; Darren Till, Leon Edwards, Callum Bisping, they are all… You know, these are just fillers.
"You know what I mean, there's only one stop!"
Bisping Jr wouldn't be the first fighter's son to make the transition to their father's sport, with a number of stories of varying degrees of success.
Floyd Mayweather Jr is one of the greatest boxers in history, forging a legacy far greater than his dad Floyd Sr, who is better known as a coach than for his 28-6-1 professional career.
Closer to home, Conor Benn is well on the way to becoming a star like his former world champion father Nigel, while Chris Eubank Jr is also looking to eclipse his dad and win a world title.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr became a world champion in his career, but could never quite reach the dizzying heights his father did in his legendary career.
In MMA there are fewer clear-cut examples, but Antonio McKee's son AJ McKee could be on his way to eclipsing his father's great career when he fights for the Bellator featherweight title next month.
The elder McKee fought around the world, including in the UFC, during his decades-long career, and his undefeated son AJ could be heading towards a million-dollar payday in LA on July 31 when he fights Patricio 'Pitbull' Freire.
