Dustin Poirier urged to snub Conor McGregor trilogy fight after KO win

Joe Rogan has urged Dustin Poirier to move on from Conor McGregor and search for "great fights" in the lightweight division.

Poirier upset the odds emphatically by knocking out former 155lb champion McGregor at UFC 257 in January.

Irishman McGregor has made no secret of his desire to face Poirier for a third time and the American is open to a trilogy fight which would conclude the rivalry which first began in 2014.

But Rogan insists there are far more interesting matchups to be made in a lightweight division bursting with quality, including a rematch with former interim champion Justin Gaethje.

Recalling Poirier's 2018 victory over Gaethje, the UFC commentator told his The Joe Rogan Experience podcast : "There's great fights for Dustin, right?

"There's the rematch with Justin Gaethje, which was a much closer fight. And that was when Justin Gaethje was fighting in a different way.

"Justin Gaethje was fighting much more reckless. There's the [Michael] Chandler fight, which they're trying to push for right away.

Who should Dustin Poirier face in his next fight? Have your say in the comments.

"It's tough to make that argument when you've got Charles Oliveira, who I think is maybe the most talented guy in the division. Charles Oliveira might beat them all."

The UFC's lightweight belt is still held by Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retired with a flawless 29-0 record last year after dominating Gaethje.

The Russian has shown little desire to return to the Octagon, insisting he was "so many levels above" Poirier and McGregor in the aftermath of UFC 257.

As such, the championship may soon be vacant and Rogan believes Poirier should face number three-ranked lightweight contender Oliveira – who has won each of his last eight fights – for gold.

"If you wanted to be a purist, Charles Oliveira vs Dustin is the fight to make," said Rogan.

"Because you've got Oliveira who just destroyed Tony Ferguson and you've got Dustin who just destroyed Conor McGregor.

"That's the fight. Let's have that fight for the new belt."
