Conor McGregor urged to avoid "stupid" rematch with Dustin Poirier

Conor McGregor has been warned he will face another defeat if he agrees to a "stupid" trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier.

Irish superstar McGregor won his first fight with Poirier in 2014 but suffered the first knockout of his career as the American triumphed in January's rematch.

The former two-division champion is the most popular star in mixed martial arts and has been able to hand-pick his opponents over the last few years.

UFC president Dana White claims McGregor is "obsessed" with facing Poirier again and the duo appear to be on course to meet in the Octagon for a third time.

But fellow UFC lightweight Kevin Lee can only see McGregor suffering another loss in a trilogy fight with Poirier.

Instead, Lee claims McGregor should resolve his rivalry with Nate Diaz, with the pair winning one fight apiece as they met twice in 2016.

"I think it makes sense for [McGregor] to go fight [Diaz] I know they’re talking about him and Poirier again, but that would be stupid, even on his end," Lee told MMA Junkie .

"I don’t think a lot of people come back from being knocked out and then in an immediate rematch get to win it.

"And it’s like, ‘Come on.’ Can we stop giving the guy so many, I mean, he gets a lot of benefits. He gets to call all his fights and avenge losses right away."

Lee – who is the number 12 lightweight contender in the UFC rankings – hopes he will be able to face McGregor at the end of the year, after his own rematch with Tony Ferguson.

"I’ve had to wait to fight Tony Ferguson three years, really it be four years by the time I fight him, and he gets to do it right away.

"Go ahead, give him Nate Diaz, and then by the end of the year, then me and him can get it on. That sounds good to me."

Lee faced Ferguson for the UFC interim lightweight title in 2017, losing the fight via submission in the third round.
