Conor McGregor makes UFC belt demand for Dustin Poirier trilogy fight
Conor McGregor has asked the UFC to create a custom-made ‘McGregor belt’ for his proposed trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier this summer.
The two fighters look set to go head-to-head again following Poirier’s surprise second round TKO victory when they met in January.
McGregor won their first fight back in 2014.
Although nothing is confirmed as yet, UFC president Dana White has revealed he hopes to sign off on the bout for UFC 264 which is expected to be held in Las Vegas.
The Lightweight fight will not be for a title but McGregor has insisted a strap should be specially made for the two to scrap over.
While retweeting an old video where he previously mentioned the idea, the former Featherweight and Lightweight champion wrote:
“I feel it’s time to break out this baby for the next fight. I ask the UFC to please create The McGregor belt. I suggest rose gold and rubies. Think patek rare.”
The MMA superstar was referring to the luxury Patek Philippe watches which can cost up to $3million (£2.2million), although a rare model was sold at auction for $31million (£22.5million) in 2019.
McGregor’s original reference to having his own belt came in 2016, ahead of his UFC 157 bout against Nate Diaz.
In the build up to the fight, in which he was about to make his debut at Welterweight level, McGregor boasted that his status elevated him beyond classification.
“It doesn’t matter what weight, divisions or anything,” he said. “Or even what belt is on the line. Because really I should create my own belt. Because I am, myself, my own belt.
“It doesn’t matter featherweight, lightweight, welterweight. It’s the McGregor belt.“

Poirier, curiously, has swerved the opportunity to fight for the UFC’s official Lightweight title following his win over McGregor at UFC 257.
The Championship was vacated by unbeaten Russiam fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov following his retirement from the sport, but Poirier has reportedly opted for the McGregor fight over a shot at the belt.
Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira will instead battle for the title at May’s UFC 262 in Texas.
