Conor McGregor given return date as UFC star is released from hospital
Conor McGregor is not expected to return from his broken leg for 12 months.
The Irishman tasted defeat for a second time against his trilogy rival Dustin Poirier at UFC 264, as he fell to the ground after breaking his ankle in the first round in Las Vegas.
But UFC president Dana White has revealed that McGregor has undergone surgery successfully and has placed a time-frame on his return to action.
"I think they just released him right now from the hospital about 10, 15 minutes ago," White told TMZ Sports on Wednesday.
"He'll be in [Los Angeles] for a little while. I don't know if he's gonna fly home, or what he's gonna do. He'll be back in a year."
It was announced shortly after the fight that McGregor would receive a medical suspension until at least August 25 in order to complete his recovery.
But he cannot return to the cage before January 7 unless he is cleared by an orthopaedic doctor.
The 33-year-old fell short in his plot at revenge after being beaten by Poirier in their second meeting back in December, and could potentially fight 'The Diamond' for the fourth time after his injury.
White also revealed that he was left with a taste for more action between the pair, as the stoppage with injury appeared to halt the progress of a fiery opening round.
It sucks,” White concluded at the post-UFC 264 press conference. “It’s brutal. It’s not the way you want to see fights end.
"Dustin will now fight for the title, and when Conor is healed and ready to go, you do the rematch, I guess. I don’t know.”
McGregor has also been linked with a variety of opponents since his defeat including YouTube sensation Jake Paul who claimed the superstar 'got what was coming' in his octagon appearance in Vegas.
The Irishman has also been linked with a UFC lightweight return against Rafael Dos Anjos who has promised to 'smash' him if the pair would finally meet after a previous fight cancellation back in 2016.
Despite losing five of his last seven UFC outings, McGregor remains ranked in the top ten lightweight rankings dropping to No.7, which is his first time ranked outside of the top five in over a decade in the octagon.
McGregor also underlined his plans to make a prompt return to face Poirier again when he launched a scathing assault on the American while receiving treatment at the end of the fight.
"This is not over! If I have to take this outside with him it's on outside I don't give a b*******," he said in a post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.
"Your wife is in my DMs, hey baby, hit me back up I'll chat to you later on, I'll be at the after party; The Wynn night club."
McGregor has also been linked with a return to the boxing ring after, with former two-weight world champion Paulie Malignaggi calling out the Irishman in a 'loser-takes-nothing' fight.
He has also continued to be mocked by former opponent Floyd Mayweather, who trolled the lightweight double-champion after his ankle injury.
