Conor McGregor criticised for being "scrawny and weak" in Dustin Poirier fight
Conor McGregor looked "scrawny and weak" when he entered the cage for his clash with Dustin Poirier.
That is the view of former UFC star Chael Sonnen in the aftermath of McGregor's second-round stoppage.
The Irishman was making his return following a 12-month lay-off after his 40-second win over Donald Cerrone last January.
He later blamed his inactivity for the defeat – his first by stoppage in is mixed martial arts career.
And Sonnen believes the former two-weight world champion may be correct in his assessment.
"There is a very line between a reason and an excuse," he said. "Conor stated the reason why he lost was his inactivity; I accept that and don't believe it was an excuse.
"The form of Conor we saw out there was the worst form of Conor I've ever seen.
"He was out shape, his timing was off, he was slow, he was unpowerful and he also looked scrawny.
"I admit the last time he fought he was up in weight but he looked scrawny and weak by his standard.
"Conor is accurate when he says he was held out and he was inactive. It's a very real thing and there is a tipping point, there is an age where it changes for everybody.
"And it's not just the years on the calendar, it's the years on your life."
McGregor has now lost to his last three fights in the UFC and faces an uncertain future in the promotion.
Before he took Poirier the 32-year-old insisted he wants to fight at least three times this year.
Following his defeat he insisted he will return and mentioned a trilogy fight with Nate Diaz as a possible option.
Diaz, however, appears more interested in taking on Poirier after tweeting that he had started training for the fight.
The pair were due to clash in 2018 but the fight was postponed.
