Colby Covington would BEAT Leon Edwards, claims former two-weight UFC champ Henry Cejudo… as he insists American can ‘grind him out over five rounds’ for welterweight title
- Colby Covington is next in line to fight Leon Edwards for UFC welterweight title
- Controversial American would be able to grind out decision, says Henry Cejudo
- He claims: ‘I can see Colby Covington being the toughest matchup for him’
Colby Covington would be the worst possible match-up for Leon Edwards and beat the UFC welterweight champion, claims Henry Cejudo.
‘Chaos’ appears to be next in line to face the Brit, with Dana White confirming the controversial American will have a title shot.
Edwards has rejected the idea but time will tell whether fighter or promoter has their way. Covington weighed in as back-up for UFC 286 but was not needed, with Edwards and Usman making the walk, and ‘Rocky’ earning a majority decision victory.
Former two-weight champion Cejudo, who is coming back to face Aljamain Sterling at UFC 288 in May, thinks Covington could have Edwards’ number.
‘When I say it’s an easy fight for Colby, stylistically you’re a good fight for him because your wrestling is still a little suspect’, Cejudo said on his podcast.

Covington is next in line, says Dana White, but Edwards does not want to give him the fight
‘With Colby Covington, he’s gonna be coming at you from Round 1 to Round 5, where Kamaru Usman wanted to display more of his actual fighting.
‘You have time to get better in these positions, but the question is will your ego allow you to? Because nobody likes to wrestle. It’s too tiring.
‘Prediction is Colby beats him. Colby maybe doesn’t stop him, but he grinds him out for five rounds.
‘It might be four rounds to one or 3-2, but I think where Colby strives the best and where Leon didn’t – maybe he did this time with Kamaru, but in the past, I can see Colby Covington being the toughest matchup for him.
‘He’s better off fighting a guy like Khamzat Chimaev, fighting a guy that doesn’t have five-round experience but yet still has that wrestling.’
Edwards was ignored by Covington when he called him out prior to being given a title opportunity.
And now the tables have turned, the Birmingham fighter does not have any interest in allowing the rival welterweight a shot without earning it.
Edwards hinted that he would be in Miami to watch Jorge Masvidal vs Gilbert Burns next month, and the winner of that could also be considered.
