Chimaev latest in long line of stars to cause chaos OUTSIDE octagon

Khamzat Chimaev is the latest in a line of UFC stars to spark mayhem OUTSIDE the octagon… Khabib infamously ignited a Las Vegas brawl, Conor McGregor smashed a bus window and Nick Diaz even started a fight with his opponent in hospital!

  • Khamzat Chimaev scrapped with Abubakar Nurmagomedov in UFC 280 crowd
  • Welterweights are not the first UFC fighters to get physical outside cage
  • Khabib Nurmagomedov infamously jumped over the cage at UFC 229
  • And Nick Diaz even started a fight with his opponent in hospital after bout

Khamzat Chimaev provided an ugly footnote to UFC 280 by sparking a mini-brawl in the crowd after Islam Makhachev’s win.

The Chechen-born star added to his reputation as the pantomime villain by shoving Abubakar Nurmagomedov and then swinging punches as both men had to be separated by security.

The feud between Chimaev and Khabib and Makhachev’s team has now been squashed but this is not the first time tempers have flared between fighters outside of the octagon.

Here, Sportsmail takes a look at some of the most high profile incidents away from the cage.

Khabib vs Team McGregor

UFC 229 remains the biggest, most controversial and and jaw-dropping event in the organisation’s history.

The feud between Khabib and McGregor was entirely poisonous and crossed lines that meant a submission win for the Dagestani did little to clean up the bad blood.

Herb Dean had to physically stop Khabib squeezing on the submission even after McGregor tapped out.

Khabib Nurmagomedov jumped from the octagon at UFC 229, sparking a mass brawl

The Russian then charged over the top of the octagon, evading the officials inside the cage and jumped two-footed onto the head of McGregor’s team-mate Dillon Danis.

A brawl then erupted between both teams and threatened to send the T-Mobile Arena into disarray.

Some of Khabib’s team-mates entered the cage to attack McGregor, who managed to land a couple of shots in reply as all hell broke loose.

Conor McGregor suffered defeat by Khabib in their 2018 title fight for the lightweight belt

But for the swift intervention of security, an already combustible situation could have been far worse.

McGregor was fined £35,000 and retrospectively banned for six months whilst Khabib suffered the worst of the sanctions after the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended him for nine months, backdated to October 6, and dished out a £380,000 fine.

Jorge Masvidal sucker punches Leon Edwards

Just minutes after his devastating KO win over Darren Till, Jorge Masvidal cut a backstage interview short and punched British welterweight Leon Edwards.

Edwards, who won the co-main event against Gunnar Nelson, came around the corner when the American strolled over, briefly exchanged words then unleashed a barrage.

The ugly scene marred what was arguably the biggest night of Masvidal’s career.

Masvidal threw the first punch at Leon Edwards after approaching with hands behind his back

The former street fighter connected with Edwards and cut him with one of the shots as he caught ‘Rocky’ by surprise.

Edwards had previously said he wanted to fight Masvidal in July but there had been nothing untoward about his statements or call-out.

Their feud was sparked by the incident and now ‘Gamebred’ is pushing for a fight with the welterweight champion, although the Birmingham native has all the power now.

He is set to take on Kamaru Usman in a massive trilogy bout in the UK next year.

Jon  Jones vs Daniel Cormier at UFC 178 media day

From the moment these two approached the face-off you just knew it was about to kick off.

Arguably the most bitter rivalry in UFC history was still in it’s infancy with so many incidents to come.

Jones and Cormier pressed their heads together before Cormier shoved ‘Bones’ in the neck. Like a bull in a china shop, Jones shoved away anyone trying to intervene in an attempt to land punches on his light-heavyweight foe.

No serious damage was done, other than to the advertising hoarding and at one point Jones even threw a shoe at Cormier.

Both men were ordered to do community service and fined 10 percent of their purse by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Nick Diaz in hospital

Above all Nick Diaz stories, myths and legends, this one probably sums him up the best.

Joe Riggs won an uneventful decision win over him in at UFC 57 on February 4, 2006 but the fight wasn’t over there.

They were both taken to a Las Vegas hospital after the fight, Riggs to be checked out and Diaz for some stiches around the eye.

Nick Diaz is a legendary figure in the UFC and there are many wild stories about him

According to Riggs, Diaz began to trash talk him and he responded in kind, thinking it was just some friendly post-fight ribbing.

Diaz struck Ribbs with a right hook and the fight escalated from there. He pinned Diaz up against a wall and was kneeing him, blood flying everywhere.

Eventually they were separated but the incident spoke volumes about the chaotic character Diaz went on to become known as.

McGregor bus attack

Dana White once described this as the darkest moment in UFC history.

McGregor and a handful of his team-mates jetted to Brooklyn after Khabib Nurmagomedov and some of his entourage had cornered Artem Lobov in a fighter hotel.

Under the proviso of protecting one of their own while also hyping up his own feud with Khabib, McGregor took extreme and violent action.

Conor McGregor and his team crashed the UFC 223 media day at Barclays Center looking for Khabib Nurmagomedov

With fighters at the event having completed a media day, they were sitting in a bus un the underbelly of the arena ready to depart.

Khabib was among those inside the vehicle when McGregor and Co appeared, demanding he come off the bus to confront him.

Khabib stayed put and McGregor picked up a metal dolly before throwing through the bus window.

It shattered the glass and injured other fighters on board, including Michael Chiesa, who later sued the Irishman.  He was spared jail and allowed to continue his fighting career on US soil.

He had to do five days of community service and complete an anger management course but was spared a criminal record or felony.

The incident took place at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, ahead of UFC 223
