Bobby Green steps up on 10 DAYS’ notice to fight Islam Makhachev having just competed at UFC 271… as injured Beneil Dariush is forced to withdraw from huge lightweight clash

  • Bobby Green is coming off decision win over Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 271
  • Islam Makhachev was due to face Beneil Dariush in massive fight next weekend
  • Dariush has been forced to pull out with an injury but Green is stepping up
  • Heroic act on 10 days’ notice will make the American hugely popular

Bobby Green just earned himself hoards of new fans after agreeing to fight Islam Makhachev on just 10 days’ notice.

Makhachev was supposed to be taking on Beneil Dariush in what looked effectively like a lightweight title elimination on February 26.

But Dariush has been forced to withdraw due to a freak injury suffered in training and the UFC were left scrambling to find a replacement.

Bobby Green defeated Nasrat Haqparast with a striking masterclass at UFC 271

Green looked sensational last weekend in beating Nasrat Haqparast by unanimous decision at UFC 271 and is ready to step right back in.

The talented striker is a totally different style of fight for Makhachev to contend with but Khabib Nurmagomedov’s protege is regarded by many as the champion in waiting.

Green posted a picture of himself on Instagram mocked up to be wearing the BMF belt with the caption: ‘If they had one for the lightweight division.’

Green is stepping up to face fearsome Dagestani star Islam Makhachev on short notice

Green is not even ranked in the top 15 in the division and the odds are stacked against him

The 35-year-old is not currently even ranked in the top 15 of the division, while Makhachev is on a nine-fight winning streak and is No 4 at 155-pounds.

The bookmakers think little of Green’s chances and he is currently 6/1, giving him only a 14 per cent chance of winning.

Makhachev has sharp stand-up skills but his real advantage will be on the ground where he can utilise his Dagesani grappling skills.

He has submitted his last three opponents and tore through Dan Hooker in the very first round back in October. Green will approach the bout in Apex Arena as though he has nothing to lose, which should make for a compelling contest.
