When does minor league baseball start? MLB unveils schedule, with Class AAA starting on April 6

After a season-long hiatus, minor league baseball will return in April.

Major League Baseball announced that 20 Class AAA teams will participate in "Opening Night," which had become tradition about a week after the major leagues started its season, on April 6. The other 10 Class AAA teams will begin play two days later.

Meanwhile, the remaining 90 teams at the Class AA, Class A Advanced and Class A are scheduled to begin on May 4.

Class AAA teams will play 142 regular season games, while the lower levels are slated for 120 contests.

The minors has undergone seismic changes in recent months, with the pandemic exacerbating the situation. More than 40 teams across the country were eliminated under a reorganization that offered 120 Player Development licenses under more centralized MLB control.
