Rockies recap: Chris Owings hits first home run of spring as part of seven-run inning – The Denver Post

Rockies 8, Angels 2 (7 innings)
Saturday at Tempe Diablo Stadium

On the mound: Right-hander Dereck Rodríguez, son of Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodríguez, was tagged for a home run for the second time in two Cactus League starts with the Rockies. The former Giants pitcher went three innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Yency Almonte, Robert Stephenson and Helcris Olivarez combined for four innings of one-hit ball, with Stephenson striking out the side in the fifth inning.

At the plate: Utility man Chris Owings clubbed his first home run of the spring as part of a seven-run fourth inning, while fellow non-roster invitee Connor Joe hit a solo homer in the seventh. Josh Fuentes continued his solid start to the spring, going 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Locked in a three-way competition for the starting spot at first base, Fuentes is now 4-for-10 with two doubles and three RBIs in five games.

Worth noting:  The Rockies have talked about being more aggressive on the base paths this season, and Sam Hilliard appears to be putting that into practice. The Rockies outfielder swiped his second bag of the spring as part of a 1-for-2 day. Those are Colorado’s lone stolen bases so far in Arizona. Opponents have stolen seven bases.
