Kevin Costner’s entrance at ‘Field of Dreams’ game brings US to tears

They built it, now Kevin Costner has opened up baseball’s Field of Dreams — the first ever Major League Baseball game in Iowa.

While every time the cinematic world means reality, it can be unbelievably corny, the MLB has nailed the crossover as the Costner stole the scene with his incredible entrance to the match.

The 1989 classic film Field of Dreams follows a farmer named Ray Kinsella, played by Costner, who builds a baseball field in his cornfield after a mysterious voice tells him “if you build it, they will come”.

Now, 32 years after the film’s release, the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox have made the trip to Dyersville, Iowa for the event at an 8,000 seat stadium specially made for the match, but unfortunately not the exact field set up for the film.

And the entrances were something only Hollywood could dream up.

To open the game, Costner entered the field via the cornfield with fans losing their minds over the entrance.

He was soon followed by the players, who entered the field in the same way.

This moved me to tears. Not sure why. Sure, I’m a mark for the movie but this was just wonderfully shot by Fox.

I’m appreciative for Kevin Costner for doing this. You could tell it meant a lot to him.

Here are the players entering the "Field of Dreams" game through the field of corn.

Kudos, MLB.

SO. DAMN. COOL. https://t.co/G4sbKI1hti

I have to say, I'm not sure I'll ever forget watching the Yankees and White Sox emerging out of the corn to the Field of Dreams music. That was something else.

Kevin Costner seems like a genuinely cool guy. He's been so gracious with his time during the MLB festivities in Iowa. Seems like he's really enjoying this. #FieldOfDreamsGame

After the entrance, Costner made a speech before leaving the field to a standing ovation.

“Good afternoon,” Costner began. “30 years ago, on the other side of that corn we filmed a movie that stood the test of time. Tonight, thanks to that enduring impact that that little moving had, it’s allowed us to come here again. But now we’re on a field that Major League Baseball made.

“We’ve come to see the first place White Sox play the mighty Yankees in a field that was once corn – it’s perfect.

“We’ve kept our promise, Major League Baseball has kept its promise, the dream is still alive. There is probably just one more question to answer – is this heaven? Yes it is.

“This field is for the players. Good luck today.”

The MLB has already announced it would return for another Field of Dreams game in August 2022 with teams to be decided.

And why not after a 17-run thriller with Chicago winning a 9-8 result that went down to the bottom of the ninth.

However, it wasn’t a thing of dreams for Aussie Liam Hendricks who’s one inning of pitching went for four runs.
