Diamondbacks’ Madison Bumgarner roughed up at “moon-like” Coors Field
Arizona Diamondbacks veteran left-hander Madison Bumgarner was riding a hot streak when he arrived at Coors Field Saturday, carrying a 1.32 ERA over his last six starts.
When he departed after six innings in the D-Backs’ 7-6 loss to the Rockies, he had allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits, including a two-run homer by Charlie Blackmon in Colorado’s four-run sixth.
After the game, Bumgarner provided his honest assessment of his performance — and of Coors Field.
“It’s hard to evaluate when you’re playing here,” he said. “Obviously, I’m familiar with it, but today, man, I felt pretty good about it really. If I just looked at the line, I would leave here pretty frustrated, and I still am to a certain extent.
“But if I just back up and look at how I felt I was throwing the ball, I feel pretty good about it. If it was anywhere else, other than the moon, it would be a completely different story, to be honest with you.”
Rodgers produces. Second baseman Brendan Rodgers, making his second start since coming off the injured list and getting called up from Triple-A Albuquerque, drove in his first runs of the season with a two-run single to right in the fourth inning off Bumgarner.
Rodgers, once the hottest prospect in the organization, might be looked upon as a player who can give the struggling Rockies a boost. But he said he’s not going to put that pressure on his shoulders as he comes back from the hamstring injury that sidelined him in spring training.
“The guys have been really helpful,” he said. “They’ve shown me that they believe in me and they want me to succeed and that’s really all I need. So I don’t put much pressure on myself.”
Footnotes. Blackmon’s homer was his third of the season and the third of his career off of Bumgarner. Blackmon has the second-most career home runs by a left-handed hitter off Bumgarner, trailing only from Rockies teammate Carlos Gonzalez, who hit five. … Josh Fuentes continues to rake at Coors. He hit two doubles Saturday and is batting .500 (13-for-26) with five doubles, two home runs and 13 RBIs through his last six home games. … The D-Backs lost their 12th consecutive road game, their second-longest road losing streak in franchise history. Their longest was 14 games, May 18-June 18, 2010.
