Wyong, Nowra previews: Gary Moore and Tim Clark to prove Invincible with Central Coast double

Gary Moore came from well behind Lester Piggott and company to win his Arc de Triomphe forty years ago on the filly Gold River but these days as a trainer, he prefers his own horses to lead wherever possible.

There is no better racetrack and no better jockey suited to the Moore style than Wyong and Tim Clark.

Clark and Moore are not quite in the Tommy Smith/George Moore league but they do have a shared Group 1 win thanks to Winterbottom hero Takedown plus a host of other ‘on pace winners’ when drawn together.

On Thursday at Wyong, the pair aim to add two more namely last start Gosford winner Prince Invincible and the recently city-placed Lucky To Win.

“Tim is probably the best in Australia (on front runners),” Moore said.

“He rides ‘Gai style’ and is a very good judge of pace. He is a bit like Dad (George Moore) was. Dad was a very good weight-for-age rider and very good in front except he rode for T.J and Tim’s riding for Gai.”

Clark gave a front running ride that George Moore himself would have been proud of aboard the speedy three-year-old Prince Invincible at Gosford who made light work of his rivals despite his heavy weight.

“When Tim really asked him to extend going into the final 100m, he was getting away from them, it was a very good win,” Moore said.

“I decided not to run the horse on Monday at Warwick Farm to keep him for Thursday.

“He has gone very well in his work at home, he looks in great shape, and I think he will be very competitive.

“We’ve kept him fresh and around the 1100m because I want to try and aim him at the first Midway race on the third of July.”

Prince Invincible is a particularly well-bred racehorse being out of a full-sister to New Zealand’s Champion 2YO in 2012/12, Ruud Awakening.

Moore and Clark’s other Wyong contender, Lucky To Win, is well on the way to paying off his original purchase price of $45,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne in 2019.

A son of Deep Field, Lucky To Win’s grandam, Hamsa, is a daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus and was herself runner-up in the Grade 1 Gazelle Stakes at Belmont Park in New York.

Lucky To Win, whose C.V includes a fifth to recent Gold Bracelet winner Grace And Harmony, a distant but somewhat brave third at Warwick Farm 15-days ago in a 1400m maiden won by Alighted.

Moore’s gelding drew the outside barrier that afternoon but has fared considerably better this time with gate three.

“He is due for a win,” Moore, the seven-time leading jockey in Hong Kong and eight-times champion trainer in Macau said.

“He ran well at Warwick Farm, he got caught deep but he still battled in the right to the line.

“I do think he is going to a better horse ridden ‘in front’ and he handles a rain affected surface which is going to be important for this race on Thursday.”

CHANCES AT TWO TRACKS HAVE LANE READY FOR A RIPPER DAY

Damien Lane could potentially pull off a rare ‘home and away’ treble on Thursday with red-hot chances on both the Central Coast and South Coast.

Lane saddles-up live hopes Budhwar, Buckin’ Ripper and Dunlee at his home track at Wyong while Thiswilldous, Candy Pants and Ready To Roam will fly the stable flag at Nowra at the same time.

Former Queenslander Ready To Roam shapes well to post his first win since joining the Lane stable seven starts ago when he contests the Kel Campbell Fuel Haulage Class 3 Handicap (1200m) at Nowra.

Thursday’s race will end a sequence of four straight runs at the provincials, all of which contained merit to varying degrees.

“He has been a touch unlucky in a few runs,” Lane said.

“He draws a nice gate (1) there and drops back to country grade so it looks a nice race for him.

“Two starts ago he got back too far and then last start, Jason (Collett) said that we probably tried to ride him too far forward. He has just got to be where he is comfortable and from barrier one, he looks to get a nice run.

“He is probably better on wet ground so it won’t worry him at all if it’s still wet there.”

Blueblood stablemate Thiswilldous, meanwhile, aims to take his tally of wins to six in Thursday’s Great Northern Benchmark 66 Handicap (1400m).

Lane had the option to run the son of Zoustar at home but chose Nowra instead where he has drawn better and won’t have to take on his stablemate Budhwar.

“He has drawn soft and he likes the wet tracks,” Lane said.

“He has been really consistent lately and it looks a nice race for him as well.”

Candy Pants, meanwhile, remains winless after 24 starts but is well placed for an overdue breakthrough.

“She was a little bit disappointing at Dubbo the other day but she got galloped on, she ripped her back shoe off and had a nick on the back of her hind leg so she had an excuse there.

“She is one of those horses that is always thereabouts and her day will come,” said Lane.
