Wild Ruler could be worth $10 million if the colt can win the Doomben 10,000
Saturday’s Group 1 Doomben 10,000 may be worth $1 million to most, but it is worth around 10 times that for expensive colt Wild Ruler who is looking to frank his stallion credentials in the process.
The son of Snitzel has done everything but win a Group 1 and victory in the 10,000 would cap a huge run for Newgate Farm who have been involved with winners of the Blue Diamond, Champagne Stakes and Golden Slipper this year.
In a field mostly featuring geldings, Wild Ruler has the most at stake of any runner, something Newgate’s managing director Henry Field is acutely aware of.
“He is a horse that (trainer) Peter Snowden has been very confident about winning a Group 1 with and hopefully Saturday is the day he does it,” he said.
“Our whole program when we race these colts – we buy about 20 a year – revolves around getting a Group 1 winning colt a year to be a future stallion for Newgate.”
In a breeding industry that is well established with the likes of superpowers Coolmore, Darley and Arrowfield, Newgate is making waves and Field has been happy to splash the cash to ensure their meteoric rise continues.

With Stay Inside, Captivant, Profiteer and Artorious on their books, the future looks bright and Field is looking to make hay while the sun shines.
“Often in racing bad runs follow good runs and good runs follow bad runs,” he laughed.
“It has been a great run, we had a super autumn because we had a share in the ownership of Stay Inside who won the Golden Slipper, Captivant won the Champagne, Wild Ruler in the Arrowfield so it has been an amazing run and hopefully it can keep going.
“I have never heard Peter more confident about a horse’s Group 1 potential – even with all the colt’s we have had in training with him.”
Attempting to tackle red-hot favourite Eduardo, Field is well aware of the challenge that awaits Wild Ruler if he is to turn around the seven-length margin from the Group 1 Galaxy in March.
“While Eduardo won by a big margin in the Galaxy, I reckon it was a funnily run race,” he said.
“Eduardo is a very good horse and will be suited by the conditions on Saturday but there is a fair chance that Galaxy was an outlier as opposed to a true representation between the two horses. If it was good ground, I couldn’t tell you how bullish I would have been about beating him.”
Field confirmed Everest aspirations for Wild Ruler in the spring if he comes through his Brisbane winter assignments in good order.
