V’landys loses defamation case against ABC over racehorse cruelty exposé
Racing NSW boss Peter V’landys will be required to pay the ABC’s legal costs after losing a defamation case against the national broadcaster over an exposé into racehorse cruelty.
Mr V’landys was interviewed by ABC journalist Caro Meldrum-Hanna in 2019 during an exposé titled The Final Race, which outlined allegations of cruelty towards Australian racehorses on a mass scale.

“It did not, however, convey that Mr V’landys actually knew that racehorses were being slaughtered and that his denials were callous and dishonest … nor did it convey that Mr V’landys permitted the slaughter to occur.”
Justice Wigney also ordered Mr V’landys to pay the ABC’s legal costs.
During the hearing in October, Mr V’landys told the court the ABC made a conscious decision at a senior level to perform a stitch-up job on him.
Mr V’landys launched the initial defamation proceedings against the ABC in February 2020.
