Unbeaten Victorian colt Profiteer out to continue charge to Golden Slipper in Saturday’s Todman Stakes at Randwick
Unbeaten Victorian youngster Profiteer will put his Golden Slipper credentials on the line in Saturday’s Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
Profiteer sits atop Golden Slipper betting after blitzing his rivals in the $2 million Inglis Millennium (1100m) at Randwick. That win followed his debut victory down the straight at Flemington last December.
Last month, NSW breeder Newgate Farm bought into the colt along with syndicators Australian Bloodstock and Scott Darby of Darby Racing.
Co-trainer Michael Kent Jr said Profiteer continued to thrive in Sydney since his five-length romp in the Inglis Millennium.
“He’s done really well since his last win, he’s really enjoying it in Sydney,” Kent, who trains Profiteer in partnership with Mick Price, said.
“We gave him a few days’ easy time after the Millennium but he had a little gallop on Saturday and he’ll have another one at Rosehill on Tuesday.
“That should have him ready to go for the Todman.”

The Todman Stakes shapes as a crucial test of Profiteer’s Golden Slipper hopes. The last six males to win Australia’s richest two-year-old race ran in the Todman Stakes.
Farnan won both the Todman Stakes and Golden Slipper last year. As did Vancouver (2015) and Pierro (2012).
However, all would not be lost if Profiteer were beaten in the Todman Stakes.
Profiteer’s sire Capitalist suffered the only defeat of his two-year-old season when he ran second to Kiss And Make Up in the 2016 Todman Stakes. But he bounced back to win that year’s Golden Slipper.
Sepoy suffered a similar fate in 2011 when Smart Missile had his measure in the Todman Stakes before the Peter Snowden-trained colt won the Golden Slipper.
Smart Missile was scratched at the barriers moments before the Golden Slipper.
Champion Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman has committed to again ride Profiteer in the Todman Stakes but has kept open his Golden Slipper options until after Saturday’s key Slipper lead-ups.
