Top jockey Michael Rodd set for return after two-month battle with illness
Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michael Rodd will make a long-awaited return to riding after being given the green light by specialists following two months on the sidelines battling ill health as a result of years of wasting.
Rodd’s last winner came in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate aboard Criminal Defence on May 15 at the beginning of the winter carnival and was forced to take a step back just a day later after dealing with an ear infection that developed into a much more serious condition.
While he was originally expected to have just two to four weeks off, specialists found years in the saddle wasting to make weights had taken its toll on his body, affecting his ability to fight illnesses.
Such was the damage done to the 39-year-old’s body, Rodd checked in to a health retreat focusing on nutrition, exercise and relaxation in order to best understand how to go about his recovery.

Following the eight-week break where he gave his body a well-earned break along with eating and exercising “properly”, Rodd said he is fitter and stronger, both physically and mentally more than ever.
“I feel super, you realise how important your health is to you and your family when it's put at risk,” he said.
“Thanks to everyone who has wished me well during this difficult time, all I want to do now is get back riding well and riding winners.”
Rodd currently has 32 metropolitan winners in Queensland this season from 217 rides.
