South Australian trainer Lindsay Cadzow lands first city winner in 40 years
A chance conversation at a polocrosse competition helped set up Lindsay Cadzow with his first metropolitan winner in 40 years of training when $101 pop Wurlies Lastchance won at Murray Bridge on Saturday.
And in a freaky connection the name of the race was the Adrian Pederick MP handicap, a man Cadzow knew of in their 20s when the pair attended a Rural Youth expedition at Fraser River, Canada, pulling Pederick to safety when his dinghy capsized.
“It’s amazing how things turned out and the connection. I looked at the name of the race when I nominated and thought about all of those years ago when we went to Canada and now he is the local member (Hammond),’’ Cadzow said.
Cadzow, 63, is based at Bordertown with a small stable of horses which compete mainly on the country circuit. After a few near misses Cadzow could have thought any metro success may not happen.
But it was while playing for the Naracoorte Polocrosse Club in a competition 18 months ago where life changed after striking up a conversation with a rival from the Yorke Peninsula Polocrosse Club about racehorses.
“The player said he knew of a racehorse called Wurlies Lastchance which was sitting in his girlfriend’s dad’s paddock in Minlaton and they didn’t know what to do with it,’’ Cadzow said.
“One thing led to another and it turns out I knew of the two, breeders Richard and Carmel Parsons who had a property called Wurlie Spring. Apparently the horse was named as it was going to be the last horse the two were going to breed.
“I went to the property, brought the horse home with me and took out a lease on the horse with my wife Kym.
“We have had a bit of fun with it but to win on Saturday was a great thrill and for Eran Boyd which was a pick-up ride.
“We had about $5 or $6 in bets on it which was nice. I have been training on and off for about 40 years and had a couple of placings in the city but finally we have a metro winner.’’

Cadzow is aiming to nominate the seven-year-old mare, now with four wins, for an upcoming Morphettville meeting.
